Visually the exterior appearance is more than acceptable and particularly internally,is in an exceptional condition/state of preservation and presentation, for a book of its 50+ year-old age.It is only the faults described that prevents a slightly higher grading overall. Despite them it really is still an exemplary example for its brightness and lack of major detracting faults. The 2nd volume of a two-volume biography of Virginia Woolf, written posthumously by her nephew Quentin Bell and the book is unique, being based upon unpublished rather than published sources.Prior to his death Leanard Woolf invited the author [Virginia's nephew] to write her biography, giving him access to all her private documents including the diaries which she kept for most of her life; and in addition he had access to two important archives and has seen a great many letters, memoirs, and unpublished works of her fiction.                                 Volume Two discusses in detail her life with Leonard Woolf and the prolonged mental breakdown of the years 1912-1915.The origins and growth of the Hogarth Press are described and also Virginia's gradual emergence as a novelist of ever-increasing reputation. The later history of her friends in the 'Bloomsbury Group' is examined as also some new and important friends of her later years: Katherine Mansfield, T.S. Eliot, Ethel Smyth, Hugh Walpole and, most important of all,Vita Sackville-West.Professor Bell describes the struggles involved in the writing of 'The Waves' and later of 'The Years',the political and personal distresses of Virginia's last decade which end with the war and her suicide.                                 Woolf's character was difficult and complex but Professor Bell has succeeded in presenting her with skill, humour and candour. He has produced a truthful, fascinating and extraordinarily evocative portrait of this remarkable woman.      Please contact seller, for correct shipping/P+p quotes - particularly ALL overseas customers - BEFORE ordering through the order page!
