Original publisher's black and white engraved map of Saint Lucia. Text is in French. A beautiful map that shows various features on the island such as towns, forts, hills or mountains, rivers, and trees. No date, circa 1753. Map with margins measures 12 1/2" x 9"; actual map area measures 12" x 7 3/4." Map is very clean and intact. There is very light off-setting and a few vertical fold lines. Title printed in upper-left corner in a decorative cartouche. Scale of distance printed beneath title. One line of latitude and longitude also included. "Tom XV" printed in lower-left corner. "No. 15" printed in lower-right corner. This map was engraved by the French cartographer and hydrographer, Jacques-Nicolas Bellin (1703-1772). Bellin was a prolific and highly distinguished mapmaker and was appointed chief cartographer of the French Navy at the age of eighteen. Bellin became well-known throughout Europe for his high-quality maps, and twenty years later in 1741, he was named Official Hydrographer of King Louis XV.
