Nine wine labels from the Old Poodle Dog restaurant. No date, circa 1908. Varying shapes and sizes, but all measure about 4 5/8 x 3 3/4" and are rectangles or rectangular in shape. Seven of the nine labels have gilt decorations. Three of the nine have black and white illustrated portraits of a poodle. All of the labels have "Bergez-Frank's." The following wines are included: Zinfandel, Chablis, Riesling, Sauternes (two labels), Burgundy, Cachet Rouge, Duff Gordon Sherry, and St.Emilion. Labels are very clean and intact. Fine copies. The Old Poodle Dog was a restaurant in San Francisco that was renowned in its time for its fine French cuisine. In 1849, two men from France, P. Allarme and A. B. Blanco, opened the Old Poodle Dog restaurant. The name of the restaurant was first called "Le Poulet d'Or," but since many of the patrons had difficulty with the French pronunciation, "Poodle Dog" became the official name. In 1908, the Old Poodle Dog (owned by J. B. Pon and Calixte Lalanne), Bergez's Restaurant (owned by John Bergez), and Frank's Restaurant (owned by Louis Coutard and Camille Mailhebuau) merged under one restaurant, Bergez-Frank's Old Poodle Dog. The new restaurant had five floors with elegant decor, and the top floor featured a ballroom. Louis dressing was also created at the new establishment by Louis Coutard in 1908. In 1922, the Old Poodle Dog closed its door due to prohibition. As Calixte Lalanne put it, "great cuisine cannot be served without wine.". Ephemera. Book Condition: Collectible-Fine.
