Berle's long-standing career began when he became a child actor. He worked his way up to radio and TV and became well-known for his appearances on comedy-variety shows. During the first Golden Age of Television, Berle catapulted to fame as host of NBC's Texaco Star Theater (1948-1955), which earned him the nicknames, "Uncle Miltie" and "Mr. Television." Notably, some businesses during this time would close for one hour every Tuesday (when the show aired) because so many viewers watched the show. Texaco Star Theater and Berle both won Emmy Awards after the first season. Berle went on to continue his acting career on other TV shows and in film.. Photographic Image.
