NFINE.Owner name in name-panel,price-clipped (originally 43p).Bright,crisp,clean,glossy laminated,wrap-around colour pictorial illustrated card boards by Alfred Bestall; with negligible shelf-wear and bumping to edges and corners.Approx 1/2" split to rear board's spine /backstrip edge at top else complete and fine - no loss though.Top corners both minimally bumped with reciprocal creases,causing resulting faint reciprocal corner creases to internal pages - from front to back and vice versa.Both bottom corner tips are minimally curled inwards,some minor and minimal,superficial indent impressions to upper board,similar but fewer to rear board. Top+fore-edges lightly aged/toned - as usual/ normal - without further blemish; contents though are particularly bright,tight and clean with no foxing/spotting,nicks or tears - no intentional dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corners - would appear unread,apart from my own collation and the aforementioned corner bumping creases.UK,slim Qrto HB,no dw/dj,as issued,1st edn,2-115pp [paginated] includes 4 colour strip stories,two sea-shell activities (shell recognition and things to make with shells),origami instructions+illustrations to make a Hobgomnie and a swimming bird respectively.Cover: Rupert climbing into a cave opening,with him holding a bucket and spade in his right hand and a bunch of seaweed in his left hand.First story: Rupert and the Gommies, plus 3 others - Rupert and the Popweed (1961), Rupert and the Early Bird (1958),and Rupert and the Windlings (1959-60). Alfred Edmeades Bestall (1892-1986),born Mandalay,Burma,the son of a Methodist minister. Studied art on a scholarship at the Birmingham School of Arts and Crafts,and afterwards at the Central School of Arts and Crafts,London.After serving in Flanders during WW1 (1915-19),he worked in Fleet Street,contributing humorous illustrations to 'Punch', 'The Tatler', 'The Bystander', 'Passing Show' and various lesser magazines. In 1936 he took over the Daily Express series of Rupert Bear strips (created by Mary Tourtel and first appeared in the paper on 8th November, 1920.) from her and by the time he retired from morning paper work in 1965,he had produced over 270 Rupert adventures.He continued to draw for the 'Rupert' annuals until 1973.
