VG.Donor's handwritten ink gift (Christmas+date) presentation inscrptn to reverse of front free endpaper at its top edge and the recipent's name in name panel too,and also (assumed her married name - surname differs from presentation surname) recipient's name to top of title page in red felt-tip ink,but no price-clip (43p) to colour illustarted title page.Bright,crisp, clean,glossy laminated colour pictorial illustrated card boards,and coloured endpapers by Alfred Bestall; with negligible shelf-wear, creasing,bumping to edges and corners.An approx 3.5cm forward-facing split at foot of spine's/ backstrip's edge on front board,a smaller-sized, 1cm rear-facing split at foot to rear board's bottom spine/backstrip edge - no loss though.All corner tips minimally curled inwards,some indent impressions to upper board,similar but fewer to rear board.Top+fore-edges lightly aged/toned - as usual/normal - without further blemish; contents though are bright,tight,clean, solid and sound - no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corners - appears unread,apart from my own collation.UK,slim Qrto HB,no dw/dj - as issued,2-115pp [paginated] includes 4 colour strip stories,two sea-shell activities (shell recognition and things to make with shells), origami instructions+illustrations to make a Hobgomnie and a swimming bird.Cover: Rupert climbing into a cave opening,with him holding a bucket and spade in his right hand and a bunch of seaweed in his left hand.First story: Rupert and the Gommies; plus 3 others - Rupert and the Popweed (1961),Rupert and the Early Bird (1958), and Rupert and the Windlings (1959-60). Studies art on a scholarship at the Birmingham School of Arts and Crafts,and afterwards at the Central School of Arts and Crafts,London.After serving in Flanders during WW1 (1915-19),he worked in Fleet Street,contributing humorous illustrations to 'Punch', 'The Tatler', 'The Bystander', 'Passing Show' and various lesser magazines. In 1936 he took over the Daily Express series of Rupert Bear strips (created by Mary Tourtel and first appeared in the paper on 8th November, 1920.) from her and by the time he retired from morning paper work in 1965,he had produced over 270 Rupert adventures.He continued to draw for the 'Rupert' annuals until 1973.
