Considering that they were originally contracted to produce dw/djs for only the first four titles of that then new series, their distinctive lithographic artwork was so popular - they worked on all the series books until their deaths in the mid-1980s. This is the first selective guide to English parish churches, judging the buildings not only from the architectural point of view, but by their atmosphere and aesthetic merit. It is also the first to list and describe the most outstanding among the many thousands of our 19th and 20th century churches, including those in large cities. The book takes the form of an historical introduction by John Betjeman, followed by the descriptions of churches, county by county, and in alphabetical order according to the name of the village or town. These descriptions have been compiled by local enthusiasts and experts, under the general editorship of Mr. Betjeman, who has also provided most of the short prefaces at the beginning of each county. The contributors were asked to write more fuly about their favourite churches (starred in the book), to which they would chiefly like to take their friends; they were also asked to supply notes on other churches, which might be important for some special reason or perhaps remarkable for the beauty of their village setting.Altogether about one quarter of the parish churches of the Church of England are included. The illustrations include drawings by John Piper and sixty-six carefully selected and representative photographs by Edwin Smith,John Piper and others.
