Internally, overall, except for a few chips to margins of Index, pages clean and readable, illustrations clear and vivid. Bindings tight. Free of stickers, bookplates, writing in text. Not a former library book set. No heavy dampness or the smell from a previous smoker. The author has written a work of substance which he based on many sources, check and re-checking the validity. He developed the main incidents of Lincoln's career and described the influences which had opened the opportunities to advance, in spite of serious rebuffs and downright defeat. He did not overload the narrative with the trivial and unessential, and rejected much which would have added to the picture; but he wished to show that as a politician, in its best as in its less laudable meaning. Lincoln was measured and judged in his generation and can only be rightly comprehended as such. From that aspect, this two-volume work is complete.
