Good condition; some stippling to cloth; previous owner's name pencilled on front free endpaper; moderate foxing throughout; fore-edge a little soiled. John William Bews (1884-1938) was born in the Orkney islands, was educated at Edinburgh University, and became professor of botany at Natal University College, Pietermaritzburg, in 1910. His study of the vegetation of Natal led to several publications, notably Plant Forms and their Evolution in South Africa. When the Natal University College became a full university in 1931, Bews was appointed principal.
