Map shows the islands of Georgian Bay up to the Freeman township of the South, to the North of the Indian Reserve of Parry Island with the townships of Cowper and Conger in the middle.
Map is part of the deceleration act issued by the Minster of Lands, Forests and Mines Frank Cochrane. It details the sale of Lands in the Georgian Bay region, but with the mindfulness of preserving the forestry of that area, such as pine timber.
The Beatty brothers emigrated to Thorold Ontario from Ireland. D. Beatty a trained Land surveyor with the help of his brother in 1835, purchased land on which they built a Grist mill, Leather tannery and Sawmill. By 1863, the Beattys had purchased the Parry Sound estate to add to the timber supplies needed for their enterprises at Thorold. In order to ship the timber between their two properties they established the Georgian Bay Transit Company, which his nephew Henry Beatty (a Canadian lawyer, university chancellor, and businessman. He was President of the Canadian Pacific Railway from 1918 to 1943; Chancellor of Queen\\\\\\\'s University from 1919 to 1923, and Chancellor of McGill University from 1920 to 1943 )took control of in 1865, transforming it into the Beatty Line of Steamships which later expanded to operate on the Great Lakes.
