Carroll Chevalier Carstairs,an American, was commissioned in the R.F.A in 1914, seeing his first action with D/50 Battery at Loos,before he was transferred to the Grenadier Guards in Nov. 1915.Having served eleven months with 3rd Bn. in France between 1916-18,he was eventually badly wounded just four days before the armistice.His hip was smashed by a German machine-gun bullet and he was taken to the Casualty Clearing Station in Cambrai. Earlier,as a 2nd Lt. he was awarded the MC for an action at Bourlon Wood 1917.
He was the son of Charles S. Carstairs, who was the London representative of American art dealers Knoedler & Co.His father died in 1928,by which time both father and son were part-owners of the Knoedler's art gallery business.Returning to civilian life,he subsequently opened his own gallery in New York.
