Dreyfus, Captain of Artillery in the French Army, and a Jew, was arrested and convicted of spying and sentenced to solitary confinement. Much controversy ensued, charges of forgery, witnesses killed, Zola's famous "J'accuse" letter, and Dreyfus was eventually pardoned. Here he documents the miserable conditions, hardships, treatment, loneliness, sickness, etc., of the five years from diary entries and letters to and from his wife.
