Du Plessis, Phil, and others (editors) : Izwi. Voice / Stem. August 1st, 1974. Vol 3 no 17

(Johannesburg: Izwi, 1974)

260 x 208 mm; side-stitched pictorial wrappers; pp. 44. Wrappers a little worn. Very good condition. Includes a signed, numbered Raymond Andrews silkscreen print on card. 'Owing to the facility of Phil du Plessis with a stencil duplicating machine and other attributes of the editors, Izwi appeared nineteen times in four years, including the final, double number. Another feature of Izwi was the number of writers it published: 150 in all. This meant that no individual writer or group of writers dominated its pages and no one, not even the editors, contributed to more than eight of the twenty numbers published. The result is that Izwi is a repository of a large collection of writers active at that time, and this is in line with Izwi's first editorial which declared that it would provide an "informal venue for the publication of work by younger writers" (Izwi 1, p. 4). Ostensibly a literary magazine, Izwi also carried a signed, numbered graphic work by an established artist in every number except 11. These graphics became sought after and, as Gray describes it, "Some dealers bought copies [of Izwi] at 50c each and flogged the graphics at R5.00 a go, throwing away the rest of the magazine (p.47). We are talking here of work by Battiss, Catherine, Clarke, Coetzee, Jensma, Meerkotter, Michelow, Starcke, Swift and others.' - Warren Siebrits: South African Literary Magazines 1956-1978.
