A historical example of an early American post revolution commercial trade detailing trans-Atlantic voyages. The first log charts the Ship “The Good Friends” from the Italian port city of Leghorn towards the Isle of France in 1805. The second log charts the Ship “The Good Friends” from The Isle of France towards Philadelphia in 1806. Both logs describe various details including the daily weather patterns and other nautical observations.

Included with the logs are a profusion of letters and other notable curiosities. The primary letter of interest is from Stephen Girard to Robert Thompson dated 1815, describing his experience on the ship Rousseau. There are also 6 Letters addressed to Sarah Thompson from 1843-1846, and 4 Letters addressed to a lady named Abigail Thompson, from 1810-1819. Also included are other curiosities from the descendants of Robert Thompson mainly from William H. Baker including Wedding Certificates, Financial Banking and Insurance statements…up until mid-1950s.

Stephen Girard was born in 1750 in Bordeaux, France. By the late 1700s, he was an Eastern Seaboard captain and shipbuilder. Girard made America his permanent home and went on to be the wealthiest citizen. In several ways, he contributed much to the early growth of the new nation he adopted. His influence was evident in shipping, construction, banking, and even in politics, later into coal mining and railroads.\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\" Girard was formally licensed as a captain in the French merchant marine by the French government. His reputation and skill as a sea captain obtained other potentially lucrative voyages for him, and he was soon carrying out sizable business deals that brought him extensive profits. Stephen Girard, who came to Philadelphia in 1777, had only one vessel in 1790, the little brigantine Kitty, of less than a hundred tons. His first large ship was the Good Friend which registered 247 tons and was built in Philadelphia in 1793. Most of the craft he owned prior to 1800 were small. (From Queens Of The Western Ocean). At the time of his death, Girard was the fourth-wealthiest American, behind John D. Rockefeller, Cornelius Vanderbilt and John Jacob Astor.
