Four volumes, complete. Contemporary brown cloth binding with gilt lettering on spine. 4 3/4" x 8." Each volume has a former ownership inscription of "Mrs. A. Tracy" (also signed "A. Tracy") written in black ink in the top margin of the first page of the first chapter. Fold-out maps were engraved by Illman and Pilbrow. Covers are very clean and intact. Pages are very clean and intact except for slight foxing. Binding is tight. All pages, maps, and illustrations of all volumes, complete. All plates, maps, and illustrations are black and white. Volume I: 316 pages; one fold-out map of Polynesia and eighteen plates and illustrations; four pages of advertisements in back for other books. Volume II: 321 pages; one fold-out map of the Georgian and Society Islands (now part of French Polynesia) and two plates. Volume III: 300 pages; two plates. Volume IV: 343 pages; one fold-out chart of the Sandwich Isles (Hawai'i) and two plates; appendix included in back; four pages of advertisements for other books in the back. William Ellis (1794-1872) was an English missionary and author who visited the Society Islands, Hawai'ian Islands, and Madagascar and wrote several books about his travels.
