B&W Photographs The author is Stephen's great granddaughter. Stephen Palmer Blake was born in 1822 in West Cambridge (now Arlington) Massachuset ts. At the age of 15 he went to sea as a cabin boy and followed the sea for 35 years. Included in these journals are his firshand accounts of gold mining, bear hunting and rattlesnake encounters in California during the gold rush era. He also described the society, customs, eliefs and treatment of California's native Americans. He also stayed two months in Hawaii and recorded his impressions of the landscape and the native Kanakas, Fine in Fine DJ, 8vo
