At the age of 15 he went to sea as a cabin boy and followed the sea for 35 years. Included in these journals are his firshand accounts of gold mining, bear hunting and rattlesnake encounters in California during the gold rush era. He also described the society, customs, eliefs and treatment of California's native Americans.
