This is an abridged government report about irrigation investigations in California that were overseen by the United States Department of Agriculture, Office of Experiment Stations in cooperation with the California Water and Forest Association. The investigations were directed by Elwood Mead, Experiment in Charge of Irrigation Investigations. He was assisted by William E. Smythe, Marsden Manson, J. M. Wilson, Charles D. Some of the subjects addressed are the layout and background of the investigation; reforming California irrigation laws; irrigation and watersheds in Northern and Southern California; comparing water needs of California, Egypt, and Italy; irrigation problems of Honey Lake Basin; failures of past enterprises; features and water rights of Yuba River; Cache Creek; irrigation problems in Salinas Valley; San Joaquin River; water appropriations from Kings River; water rights on Los Angeles River; and water storage problems in Southern California..
