Publication of the 1820 constitution of Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim synagogue, also known as Congregation Beth Elohim, with a short preface by Elzas, who was rabbi of Beth Elohim at the time. The Congregations was founded in 1749, making it one of the oldest Jewish congregations in the United States. The synagogue is significant in that it was the site where Reform Judaism was first evinced. It is noteworthy that in 1820, via this constitution, the congregation did not accept converts amongst black Americans and rejected mixed-race children of Jewish men and Black women (Wikipedia, 2019) SUBJECTS: Jews - South Carolina - Charleston.
