George Rogers Clark (1752-1818) was a soldier and settler from Virginia. He served as leader of the Kentucky militia during the Revolutionary War and is best known for the conquest of Kaskaskia (1778) and Vincennes (1779) which weakened the British influence in the Northwest Territory. While opening engagements of the Northwest Indian War after the Revolutionary War, Clark was accused of being drunk on duty. He was disgraced and forced to resign ending his military career before the age of 30. The story was planted by a Spanish spy Wilkinson. Clark was denied payment for expenses and wages by Virginia which slowly forced him into poverty and he went from the largest landholder in the Northwest Territories to living on a small piece of land in Indiana.
