Etches, Richard Cadman : Four Letters from Richard Cadman Etches to Sir Joseph Banks, 1788-92

Pages 125-139; stapled. Reprinted from BRITISH COLUMBIA HISTORICAL QUATERLY, VI (April 1942). Richard Etches was the head of a London trading firm which formed the King George's sound Company during the 1780s to exploit the Maritime Fur Trade as a way to break the East India Company's monopoly of the China Trade. His ships were 'King George' under Nathaniel Portlock and the 'Queen Charlotte' under George Dixon. Though he blames Dixon and Portlock for the failure of the company, it was the failure to gain trading rights in China for goods that caused the failure. The letters are addressed to Sir Joseph Banks who played a background role in the British ventures into the Pacific Ocean at the end of the 18th century. Fine clean copy.. Book. Book Condition: Collectible-Fine. Binding: No Binding
