Commander Caractacus Pott is a struggling inventor.His Whistling Sweets,tried out on his two children,Jeremy and Jemima,bring in enough money to buy his family a car. And the car is the once-famous Chitty-Chitty-Bang-Bang with a six-cylinder Zeppelin engine.Fact and fiction are skilfully blended to make an exciting story. John Mackintosh Burningham (b. 1936) works as John Burningham,born in Farnham, Surrey.Studied at the Central School of Arts and Crafts (1956-59),Writer and illustrator of children's books and he also occasionally designed posters (e.g for London Transport).Winner of the Kate Greenaway Medals for 'Borka' (1963) - his first picture book - and 'Mr Grumpy's Outing' (1970).He works in a wide range of media,sometimes within a single work,as in 'Come Away from the Water,Shirley' (1977), where 'reality',shown in line with pale crayon tints,is contrasted with the vivid colour washes of the 'daydream' pages.His imagery is simplified and he sometimes successfully adopts a child-like drawing style to increase the sense of participation of young readers. 'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang' among his earliest published works (1964-5) and he was offered the opportunity to illustrate Fleming's 'Chitty Chitty' almost immediately after winning his first Kate Greenaway Medal.
