Derek Hill's reputation as a portrait painter of well-known people, from Freddie Mills to Prince Charles, has helped to obscure his achievement as a landscape painter. In this book Grey Gowrie, while fully acknowledging Hill's status as one of Britain's leading portraitists, argues that he is also the best painter of Irish landscapes since Jack Yeats. As a child Grey Gowrie was a neighbour of Hill's in Donegal and the strong friendship between them is evident in the conversation reproduced here,in which Hill talks uninhibitedly of his life and work and inflluences. In his teens Hill studied stage design in Munich and came under the influence of Bauhaus; a purpose of this book is to emphasize the modern, even contemporary aspects of his best Tory Island landscapes, and to re-evaluate his reputation as a landscape painter in the tradition of Constable,Corot and Courbet. This is not just a selection of Hill's work with an appreciative introduction; so much of his personality shows in the text that one gets a real sense of the connection between man and his paintings.Hill's life has been a fascinating and priviliged one but by no means free from pain, and it is the lonelier side of his nature which is reflected in th turbulence and passion of his Irish landscapes. Lord Gowrie is Chairman of Sotheby's in London (then 1987).He was Minister for the Arts 1983- 1985. Born 1916 Southampton,Hampshire, died London, 2000.Derek Hill first worked as a theatre designer in Leningrad in the 1930s.His long association with Ireland began when he visited Glenveagh Castle,County Donegal to paint the portrait of the Irish-American art collector, Henry McIlhenny.Hill enjoyed increasing success as a portrait painter in the 1960's and 1970's, his many subjects included many notable composers, musicians, politicians and statesmen, including the Prince of Wales. The Royal Hibernian Academy hosted a Retrospective exhibition of Hill's work,in 1998.In 1999,he was made an honorary Irish citizen by Irish President Mary McAleese.
