Hyposcope : YOULTEN'S MAFEKING OBSERVATION HYPOSCOPE

230 mm in length and 30 mm square, 2 internal mirrors, a rare original tin trench style periscope with colourful decoration on each of the four sides, the name appears on the front with an illustration of an artilleryman standing beside a field gun with crossed flags at each end, on another side there is an illustration of Boy Scouts using the periscope behind rocks and a tree, a portrait of Lord Baden-Powell, the "World's Chief Scout" also appears on one side, some chipping of the paint but the colours remain bright and generally in very good condition

The following statements appear printed on the sides of the hyposcope, 'A British General's son has acknowledged that Youlten's Observation Hyposcope saved his life many times. Rifle hyposcopes have received the approval of His Majesty King George, Field Marshals Roberts and French and a host of other distinguished British officers. Youlten's Observation Hyposcope is a Hand Periscope. A periscope enables an observer in a submarine to apparently look through the ship. Youlten's Mafeking Hyposcope apparently enables a man to look through a rock or other opaque object'. There is also a quote from Freemantle's Book of the Rifle, 'A Little device may be mentioned which is the outcome of the Boer War. At Mafeking ... it was arranged to enable an effective fire to be truly directed while the whole head of the firer was below the sheltering level of the earthwork protecting him'.
