Maurice William Greiffenhagen (1862-1931) born in London.Studied at the Royal Academy Schools,where he won the Armitage Medal,the Cartoon Medal and various other prizes.He became well known as a magazine and book illustrator (often of 'society' subjects) during the 1890s,working mainly in black and white. For his later illustrative work (mainly for books),he often worked for halftone reproduction,handling wash and bodycolour with panache.For full colour illustration he used deep rich hues.His work tended to be peopled with healthy square-jawed outdoor types (prototypes of the typical boys' adventure heroes of the inter-war period),and he was a noted illustrator of the works of H. Rider Haggard.After 1900, Greiffenhagen concentrated increasingly on portrait painting and became much less prolific as an illustrator; he also worked as a decorative artist and poster designer. He was head of the Life Department at Glasgow School of Art (1906-29).One of the earliest members of the NEAC (1886); elected ARA (1916) and RA (1922).
