Generally considered the father of the historical novel,Sir Walter Scott (b.1771, died 1832) invented a literary form that remained popular for over one hundred and fifty years.Combining in his works romance, action, and suspense,he brought long-gone eras back to life with splendor and spectacle. Set in England just after the Third Crusade,Ivanhoe is the tale of Sir Wilfrid, a young Saxon knight, and his love for the royal princess Rowena. With his father against their union,Wilfrid embarks on a series of adventures to prove his worth, finding himself in conflict against the Normans and the Templars, and allied with such larger-than-life figures as Robin Hood and Richard the Lion-Hearted.A timeless story of courage, chivalry, and courtly love, 'Ivanhoe' is a grand epic. Maurice William Greiffenhagen (1862-1931) born in London.Studied at the Royal Academy Schools, where he won the Armitage Medal, the Cartoon Medal and various other prizes. He became well known as a magazine and book illustrator (often of 'society' subjects) during the 1890s,working mainly in black and white. For his later illustrative work (mainly for books),he often worked for halftone reproduction, handling wash and bodycolour with panache. For full colour illustration he used deep rich hues. His work tended to be peopled with healthy square-jawed outdoor types (prototypes of the typical boys' adventure heroes of the inter-war period),and he was a noted illustrator of the works of H. Rider Haggard. After 1900, Greiffenhagen concentrated increasingly on portrait painting and became much less prolific as an illustrator; he also worked as a decorative artist and poster designer. He was head of the Life Department at Glasgow School of Art (1906-29).One of the earliest members of the NEAC (1886); elected ARA (1916) and RA (1922).
