Jackson (1902-1994) was the first female Board Certified orthopedic surgeon in the U.S. (1937). She was also the first female member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. (It is reported that she opened her office in Dallas in 1932, the year prior to the founding of the A.A.O.S. All who practiced orthopedics were allowed to join at that time except her. After becoming Board Certified, she eventually gained membership). In 1983, the Ruth Jackson Orthopedic Society was founded, and named for her, as a support and networking group for female orthopedic surgeons, as well as promoting orthopedic research and care for female related orthopedic conditions.
