UK,8vo HB minus dw/dj,1st edn.No owner inscrptn.Bright,crisp,clean,sharp-cornered,publisher's original pictorial decorated terracotta cloth front board+ spine,illustrated by Stanley Davis,with black ink printed letters to front+spine/ backstrip,rear board plain and undecorated,and plain white pastedowns and endpapers - front free endpaper with a couple of accidental,oblique criss-crossing creases towards its fore-edge, hinges solid and sound with no cracking. Negligible shelf-wear,bumping,creasing to edges,corners and head+foot of spine - all corners though,with very miniscule rubbing and reciprocal fraying - no nicks,tears or splits present.Front board's black ink printed illustration,features the self- portrait of Will Owen that he used in so many of his illustrations - i.e a very fat man with a goatee beard - this fat man in a sleeping pose,asleep on a wooden crate, but with Davis's credit for that.Spine black blocked illustrated panel with a hat and coat dressed woman's portrait.Fore- edges to front+rear boards each partially affected with bleaching of original colour.Top+fore-edges toned/aged but clean with little if any,foxing/spotting; contents bright,tight,clean with minimal, occasional and random foxing/spotting, solid and sound - other than two small closed tears at top edge of title separator page for the first story,'Back to Back',pp41-44 inclusive - with a small torn portion of lower corners' losses - but no intentional dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corners,could appear unread - apart from my own collation.Contains the following ten short stories: Back to Back, Keeping Watch,The Understudy,The Weaker Vessel,Stepping Backwards,The Three Sisters,The Unknown,The Vigil,Easy Money and His Other Self.UK,8vo HB, minus dw/dj, 1st edn,v-vipp+3-247pp [paginated] includes 10 short stories which includes his gothic story 'The Three Sisters',6 colour+b/w full-page illustrations - frntis included,by Stanley Davis and all called for and present,plus [unpaginated] colour+b/w illustrated frntis,title page, contents list/table,title separator page, and individual story title separator pages.Author's 16th sequentially published work.During his lifetime he wrote in excess of 150 short stories,but the writing declined around the outbreak of WW1,when he concentrated on adapting the stories for stage production. A later title,in order of publication,and collectable item in Jacobs's and its contemporary style,and will be an important and welcome addition to his canon. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. 247 pp. Dull gold-leaf on spine title [un-worn]. Original orange cloth, pictorially blocked in black on upper cover and spine and 6 plates by 'Stanley Davis'. CONTAINS THE GOTHIC HORROR STORY ' THE THREE SISTERS'. A sound copy, browned end-papers and occasional fox mark. Although the illustrations are credited to Stanley Davis the drawing feature the self-portrait of Will Owen that he used in so many of his illustrations i.e a very fat man with a goatee beard and a tall hat. [The front cover of Jacob's book 'Deep Water' is another classic example of Owen drawing himself]. Neat ink owners name and address to the end-paper.. Illustr.: Stanley Davis. Book Condition: V.g..
