As Protestant missionaries, Fletcher and Kidder tried literally and figuratively to spread the Gospel during two decades of work in Brazil. This is the text of the revised 6th edition, to which had been added 100 pp. of text, as well as numerous corrections and updates from the first edition. Both authors had returned in the decade after the appearance of the book--and Fletcher had travelled 2000 miles up the Amazon in 1862. Chapter 8, on Brazilian slavery, had been especially updated. The J. H. Colton map of “Brazil and Guyana� is “one of the most perfect ever published of an Empire which has never been surveyed.� “The numerous illustrations are, with few exceptions, either from sketches, or daguerrotype views taken on the spot� (5).
