James, Henry : The Portrait of a Lady

The Easton Press, Norwalk, Connecticut, 1978

[1978] THIS IS THE FULL LEATHER, GILT, COLLECTIBLE EASTON PRESS BOOK EDITION, NOT A CHEAP COMPOSITE LEATHER OR THE CLOTH/PAPER TRADE EDITION (not a facsimile or recent reprint). This beautifully bound edition in genuine maroon leather was hand selected from individually tanned hides. Sophisticated hubbed design (five raised ridges) on spine, stamped with gorgeous accents of 22kt. Gold - a hallmark of fine bookmaking. Illustrations by Colleen Browning: frontispiece and illustrations throughout. Collector's edition. Textured and shaded, acid-neutral paper won't turn yellow over time. Pages are Smyth-sewn into the binding for permanence (not glued like ordinary books). Endpapers are beautiful satin moiré, specially dyed for the publisher. Edges gilded on three sides to enhance the book's elegance. Satin ribbon page marker bound into book. Condition: Book plate of former owner affixed to first pastedown endpaper; rubbing to gilt on fore-edge and a tad on bottom edge; else overall Near Fine. Free of tears or cracks to binding joints and hinges, writing and notations in text, and page tears. Not a former library book. Book never read (purchased by physician for display in bookcase). Kept in temperature controlled environment, not smelly or speckled with humidity stains. And no smoker's smell. Henry James's reputation was founded on his versatile studies of the American girl. In a series of witty tales he pictured the self-made young woman, the bold and brash American innocent who insists upon American standards in European society. This book is the most successful of the Henry James novels - actually his masterpiece. The leading character is Isabel Archer, a good-looking woman from Albany, New York, who travels to Europe and gets caught up in a strange romantic situation. Beautifully written, fascinating reading. And simply a beautiful, full leather-bound book in gift-giving condition. Note: We are a well-established, well-respected, ethical book dealer in business since 1991. We describe the condition of our books thoroughly and honestly, so you'll know exactly what you will be receiving when you order. We ship promptly.. Illustr.: Colleen Browning. Book Condition: Near Fine. Binding: Full-Leather
