A speech originally delivered before the United States House of Representatives on January 18, 1848 by John Jameson (1802-1857), an American lawyer and politician. He served as a U.S. Representative from Missouri for three Congresses from 1839-1841, 1843-1845, and 1847-1849. He was a Democrat. In this speech, Jameson takes a multifaceted stance on the Mexican-American War. He appears to be generally supportive of it and repeatedly asks the rhetorical question if the U.S. was or ever will be "in the right" in terms of waging war with other countries. He compares the Mexican-American War with the American Revolutionary War and the War of 1812. He acknowledges there was backlash and criticism toward the U.S. about its participation in and handling of those two previous wars. Jameson says, "Although we were wrong in all this [a reference to President James K. Polk's and Zachary Taylor's military movements toward the Rio Grande, the annexation of Texas, and the U.S. knowing that Mexico would retaliate if Texas were annexed and U.S. forces were sent toward Mexico], yet, as I go for my country right or wrong, and especially in times of war, and since we have got down now to the present war, I propose to examine these several causes assigned for brining on the war on our part." Jameson states he believes that true patriots support their country no matter if said country acts in the right or wrong. However, Jameson also believed U.S. involvement in the war was justified because he took the position that Texas was already a sovereign territory independent of Mexico.. Book.
