Interesting early Japanese edition of Matisse' work published in Tokio.In white paperboards with blue and black lettering and matching brown printed paperslipcase with black and red lettering in English and Japanese. 7 pages of color plates followed by 31 pages of black and white plates and 10 pages of text in Japanese. I inch of the top spine paper cover is missing else in clean and unread condition. In 1925, the author of the title, Riichiro Kawashima, became a member of the Kokugakai Club which helped to introduce renowned western painters to Japan by organizing special exhibits every year. The artists shown included: Matisse, Bonnard, Rodin, Bourdelle, Bernard Leach, Rouault, Monet, Renoir, Chagall, Picasso, and Cezanne. These exhibitions not only helped members train themselves, but also contributed to influencing other artists in Japan, who until then had very little chance to see Western paintings..
