This is a copied Letter of Recommendation for Bernard O'Kane by Franklin Williams, a Custom House official. The letter was possibly written on the occasion of a career opportunity for O'Kane within the Republican Party. Williams identifies O'Kane as having worked as "Inspector in the Custom House, a member of the State Police, and a patrolman on the city police" and commends his character, intelligence, and ability. Williams remarks further how "[O'Kane] had the confidence of such men as Gov. Andrew, Judge Russell, Gov. Rice, and many other prominent gentlemen of the Republican Party ...." The letter bears the copied signature of Williams which appears as "Franklin Williams." Williams's signature is attested to by a copied signature of Charles R. Train, the State Attorney General, which appears as "Chas. R. Train." At the bottom of Page 2 is a note handwritten and signed by O'Kane which reads, "N. B., Mr. Williams is well known as an Officer in the Custom House, with whom I have cooperated, politically, many years. Bernard O'Kane.". Manuscript.
