The Knights of Pythias is a fraternal society that was founded in 1864 by Justus H. Rathbone and inspired by John Banim's play, Damon and Pythias, and the legend upon which it is based. The legend and the play are centered upon Pythagorian virtues such as loyalty, honor, and friendship. The Knights of Pythias adopted similar ideals for their mission and ideology. The Pythian motto is "Friendship, Charity, Benevolence." Constituent groups within the society are known as "lodges." Today, there are about 2,000 lodges worldwide and over 50,000 members.. Book.
