Gilt illustration of a laurel wreath and stars on the front cover. 5 1/2" x 8 1/4." 544 pages, complete. Nine black and white plates, complete. Former ownership inscription in blue or purple pencil on a front flyleaf: "Birthday present to my husband, June 3d 1887, Adams N.Y., Kate W. Mackie." Covers are very clean and intact. Slight fraying/small chip at the tail of the spine measuring about 1/2" x 1/4." Pages are very clean and intact except for the title page, frontispiece, and the protective leaf for the frontispiece, which have foxing. A comprehensive biography of Henry Ward Beecher (1813-1887), an American Congregationalist clergyman, social reformer, and one of the brothers of Harriet Beecher Stowe. He advocated for the abolition of slavery and supported women's suffrage and the temperance movement.
