LIE, Jonas. WEIRD TALES FROM NORTHERN SEAS from the Danish of Jonas Lie [translated] by R. Nisbet Bain. [London]: Kegan Paul, Trench, Trubner & Co. London Ballantyne Press, 1893. First edition thus, collected and in English. 12 black and white plates (after pen and ink drawings) by Laurence Housman. Title-page printed in red and black. vi, [2], 201 pp. Octavo, publisher's blue cloth binding; black scroll devices printed to upper board and spine, with title and publisher's name upon them. Bookplate (Lieut. Col. E[dward]. W[alter]. Blunt-Mackenzie, Castle Leod, Strathpeffer) to front pastedown. Cloth shows general, light soiling and is a bit sunned at spine, with slight wear at heel and crown. Internally clean, although the bookblock is over-opened in a couple of places. Very good overall. Jonas Lie (1833-1908), a Norwegian novelist, and friend of Ibsen and Bjornson, sets this collection of eleven folk-tales in his native province of Nordland. The superstitions, beliefs, and wild imaginings of the Nordland fisherman are combined in tales that often include the supernatural beings, for the most part malignant and malefic, that haunt those shores. Laurence Housman (1865-1959) was a leading book illustrator of the 1890s, basing his style on the traditional wood engravers of the 1860s and the work of the Pre-Raphaelites. His first success was his illustrated edition of Christina Rossetti's Goblin Market (1893). (Osborne, p. 36; Houfe, Dict. of Brit. Bk. Illus., p. 346)., Very Good
