Folio - over 12" - 15" tall. On offer is a wonderful handwritten and hand drawn manuscript book created by H. Louisa Chambers of Brook House in Miss Steven's School in Bishops Monkton, Knaresborough as evidenced on one of two pasted down notes in the upper right hand corner cover. The other note in a different hand mentions the estimated date of 'about 1860'. The manuscript in a wonderful calligraphic hand, with beautiful headings, details, describes and maps all the counties of England with very in depth notes on the Towns, Rivers, Occupations, Character, Varieties, Remarkable Persons and many more. Towards the end of the book Miss Chambers either runs out of time or steam and a few of the counties are short their hand drawn map or illustration she would frequently take out of a magazine to highlight the county. Most entries also have a colour cutout of the county armorial. This is really a stunning manuscript relic capturing the geographic and demographic state of England in a county by county method presented beautifully.
