An early proposed route of the important Lancaster Canal, surveyed by Robert Whitworth and engraved by Lodge. Two further surveys were carried out before work started in 1792, with the famous engineer John Rennie (the builder of the London Bridge now in Arizona) in charge. The canal is currently being restored.
