Letter, handwriting, and signature are very clean and intact. Slight crease in lower-left corner of letter. A couple small splits along the seams toward the edges, not affecting handwriting. Original retained carbon copy of Kohn's letter included, which London is responding to. Kohn's letter is datelined January 8, 1915 in Honolulu, measures 8 1/4" x 8 1/4", and is one page. Kohn's letter is likewise very clean and intact, has fold lines (likely from mailing), a few wrinkles at the top, and two pieces of white tape on back. Both letters are Very Good copies. A stunning, two-letter collection eoncompassing correspondence between the renowned American author, Jack London (1876-1916), and a Chicago businessman and civic leader, Simon A. Kohn. London is responding to Kohn following a conversation they apparently had "coming down on the last trip of the 'Great Northern' about London's book, The Little Lady of the Big House. In his letter, Kohn recalls the conversation and asks that London write down what he had told him earlier so that he, Kohn, could add it to his collection of letters. They had discussed the suicide of the main character in the novel. London replies, somewhat irritated, "Not on your life." The Little Lady of the Big House would be London's last novel published in his lifetime. Sadly, London passed away later that year on November 22. The transcription of London's letter is as follows: "Dear Simon A. Kohn: - "Not on your life! Imagine me, having written everything necessary for the conclusion of 'The Little Lady of the Big House,' sitting down & writing it all over again herein in order that you may add a manuscript letter of mine to your collection! It is much easier for me to write you this letter of denial, which serves the same purpose, & gives you a manuscript letter for you collection just the same. Sincerely yours, Jack London; Honolulu, Jan. 11, 1915.". Manuscript. Book Condition: Collectible-Very Good. Binding: No Binding
