Hardcover, three-quarter binding, corners and spine in calf leather; five raised hubs (ridges), six compartments on spine; decorative endpapers and edges; frontispiece of Longfellow and full page illustrations throughout, illustrative head-pieces/end-pieces highlighting each chapter, 698 pages. NOT A FACSIMILE, CLOTH BOUND TRADE BOOK, OR RECENT REPRINT. THIS IS THE ACTUAL ANTIQUARIAN BOOK, PUBLISHED IN THE 1800s. Condition: Wear to binding, chips, scrapes (pieces missing from decorative paper boards and scrapes to leather at rear), wear/chips at extremities, joints, and raised hubs. Top/foot of spine has wear/short tear, lettering on spine no longer visible. Slight bump to one corner, all corners showing a tad. Light cracks to hinges, but holding tight. Parts of turn-ins missing, a few chips to endpapers (mostly to rear endpapers), old bookseller's sticker on first pastedown endpaper (Bordeaux, France). Former owner's names/gift inscriptions (one dated Dec. 1917 at Bordeaux, France) on free endpaper and blank page. Creases/damp stains to preliminaries. Text block: Lightly age toned, periodic creases/foxing, several corners bumped. Overall: Fair. Text: Very Good condition, clear and readable. Illustrations are sharp, vivid. Virtually no page tears or writing in text. Book is tight. Uncommon work, highlighting the poetic works of the American writer, Longfellow, which includes a critical memoir by William Michael Rossetti.
