On November 29th,1978,ten white faces and one black face emerged from the tunnel at Wembley to play for England in an international against Czechoslovakia. The odd face out belonged to Viv Anderson,a young full-back from Nottingham who on that frozen night became the first black footballer to play for his country in a senior international. By playing for England, the country in which he was born and brought up,Anderson represented a new generation of black sportsmen whose excellence at football, athletics and cricket has arguably done more than any number of Race Relations Acts or Boards to break down the solid barriers of racial prejudice in Britain. This, however,is not a rags to riches tale of the backstreet kid.It is the story of a highly successful professional footballer who has won one League Championship, two European Cups and three League Cup Medals, quite apart from over thirty international caps (then 1988).He has played under managers as diverse in character and method as Brian Clough and Bobby Robson, been part of two World Cup campaigns, and played for three of the best clubs in the country - Nottingham Forest,Arsenaland Manchester United. But,though Anderson's life and career are the central theme, the book also takes a wider look at the footballer's lot,at the finances, the morals and the rhythms of the game which absorbs so many people so much of the time. Anderson regards football as a business first and an enjoyable pastime second.Lively, humorous and articulate,he has strong opinions on the game.He is now in the middle of a four-year contract (then 1988) with Manchester United, the club which rejected him at the age of seventeen, but he has one other ambition left in the game. No,not to become the first black manager.'I think I'd like to end my days playing sweeper for Brighton . . .'
