Presents, at long last, Antonio Lopez's "Instamatics". His legendary Eastman Kodak Instamatic photographs, as envisioned by the late artist. A casual photo-album that, when one thinks about it, has the same rigorous grid format as Modernist art, except that it is also infused with Antonio's uninhibited Latin sensuality (Lopez insisted on simply being called Antonio). In these Instamatics, Antonio melded his two greatest passions, fashion and art, turning the celebrity into an irresistible erotic subject. "Throughout his career, Antonio kept a visual photographic diary of the people who came and went through the studio where he and his partner, Juan Ramos, were rewriting the history of fashion illustration. Antonio was not content to merely record these faces and bodies; he elaborated each into a sequence, and then explored the potential fantasy within each series. This is the chronicle of an era as seen through the eyes and sensibility of one of its greatest visionaries" (Publisher's blurb). Antonio did not record a private obsession (as Carlo Mollino, another great artist/illustrator, did with his Polaroid grid-sequences of naked women). He recorded for posterity a decade, the Seventies, when Karl Lagerfeld, Yves Saint Laurent, Andy Warhol, Robert Mapplethorpe, Jessica Lange, Tom Berenger, Jerry Hall, Paloma Picasso, and Diane Von Furstenberg as well as some of the most beautiful and sexiest male and female models, actors, and artists were either aspiring, arriving, had arrived or were at the peak of their fame. Antonio's drawings appeared in Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, Interview, and Elle, among other magazines, were exhibited in galleries throughout the world, and prompted The New York Times to call him the "Picasso of fashion illustration". His Artist Book, "Tales From The Thousand And One Nights" (1985), was the inspiration for Marc Jacobs' "Arabian Nights" 2007 Collection. Antonio was an early casualty of AIDS at its most virulent: He contracted Kaposi's Sarcoma, which disfigured his face and body, and died at the age of 44 in 1987. For someone who loved beauty at its most seductive and hedonistic, his death was abrupt, bitter, and heartbreaking. Many of the Beautiful People in this great book met the same fate, giving these Instamatics the poignant, glowing beauty that, as Barthes once wrote, only photographs do. An absolute "must-have" title for Antonio Lopez collectors. This title is a classic. This is one of few copies of the Limited Edition still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. A scarce copy thus. 85 color plates. One of the greatest artists of the 20th century. A fine copy. . ISBN 193188594X.
