See rja487714 'THE GREAT BATTLES of the BRITISH NAVY,FROM THE EARLIEST PERIOD DOWN TO THE PRESENT TME' for another similar related title by same author - but in a decorative cloth binding with chromo-lithographic illustrated issue/edn. Richard Caton Woodville (1856-1927).Born in London, son of an American painter of the same name.Brought up in Russia and Germany; studied art at Dusseldorf under Eduard von Gebhert and in Paris under Jean-Leon Gerome (1824-1904). Early on,he achieved a European reputation as a painter of battle scenes, and in 'Random Recollections' expresses mild surprise that the British public should have only sporadic enthusiasm for paintings of such subjects. As a correspondent for 'The London Illustrated News',he covered a number of military campaigns, including the Russo-Turkish war (1878) and the Egyptian rebellion (1882),and he also depicted the Boer War and World War 1.He was a successful portrait painter, with Edward VII among his sitters.Woodville was one of the most popular of the late 19thC war corresponndents, and was admired for the panache of his style and the accuracy of his detail. He was skilful at conveying the excitement of battles and at overlooking the depressing realities of such encounters. His book illustrations are mostly of military subjects. However, when his work as a reporter called for drawings of civilian hardship and poverty,he was able to respond with sympathy,as demonstrated by his pictures of Ireland for 'The Illustrated London News' (1880),which were admired by Vincent Van Gogh. His early illustrations are sometimes in black and white, his later ones in halftone or full colour.
