Small 4to (216 x 150 mm); laminated pictorial boards; pp. 324 + (iii); liberally illustrated with full-colour photographs and distribution maps. Fine condition. 'The world's parrots consist of approximately 350 species, classified in 72 genera. All the Amazon parrots are placed in the genus Amazona. Without doubt, this is one of the half dozen or so best-known parrot genera. Years ago these parrots were often called "Amazon Green", in line with African Grey, as though all Amazons were one species. In fact, there are 28 species, the last named of which was described as recently as 1989. Amazon parrots have been popular pets for several centuries. We know this because some are depicted in family paintings of obvious antiquity. Most of the diverse groups of parrots are unknown to the average person, yet Amazons are known throughout the world to anyone with even a passing interest in parrots. For thousands of people, Amazons are cherished companions in the home. Others keep them in pairs in aviaries; the less fortunate birds live in wire cages for breeding purposes. The way in which their human carer interacts with them on a daily basis, and how he or she learns about their dietary requirements and other needs, will influence the quality of their lives - and the length of it. This book aims to provide the information that will allow them to live a happy and healthy life, also to inform the reader about the many threats that face them in the wild. Hopefully it will encourage them to support conservation projects that will assist the continued survival of these wonderful parrots in their natural habitats.'
