The intimate world of snooker, where every face is familiar and every move seen by millions of television viewers, has produced an array of characters that fascinate the aficionado.Such is the coverage of snooker that every shot is a close-up; changes in hairstyle and dress are noted and discussed and no emotion goes unrecorded. Here in one collection are the 'very interesting' world champion,Steve Davis; the tie-less twitching,self-styled 'people's champion',Alex Higgins;'snifing' John Spencer; the lager-laden Bill Werbenuick; Jimmy White,'the whirlwind'; and colourful Joe Johnson. John Ireland's collection includes not only the current stars of the game, but also the leading referees, unobtrusive arbiters but central figures on the television screen, and a Hall of Fame which is led by the all-time greatest Joe Davis, with several other illustrious names in the history of billiards and snooker. No one has been more closely associated with the game and its players than Ted Lowe, whose hushed voice has been so much a part of snooker from the early days of Pot Black. His succinct pen-portraits provide insider information on the waistcoated characters, usually so inscrutable to the television viewer. Together John Ireland and Ted Lowe provide a portfolio of characters which will delight every snooker enthusiast and which will be a classic collection in years to come. John Ireland has never been an enthusiastic participant in the world of sport but as an illustrator and caricaturist he has developed a fascination for the sporting heroes that now enjoy such prominent exposure on television and in the press. From his home in Norfolk,John has created a galley of portraits in the tradition of Spy's celebrated caricatures or Vanity Fair. His first collection,'Cricket Characters' (see my book ID rja30128),was published to great acclaim in 1987 and was followed by the equally successful 'Racing Characters' and 'Golf Characters' (see my book ID rja449613). Ted Lowe was born into a horseracing family and brought up in Lambourn. He moved to London to learn the pub business and it was there that he first learnt to play snooker. He was appointed General Manager of Leicester Square Hall which was developed on the bombed-out site of Thurston's,for many years the home of billiards and snooker in London. While developing a successful career for himself in the leisure and entertainment business Ted Lowe devised 'Pot Black' for the BBC in 1969 and unwittingly set in motion a massive growth in the popularity of the game that has led to the high profile that snooker enjoys today. Now in his 35th year (then 1989) as a snooker commentator,he is President of the BSCC,the governing body of billiards and snooker, and a director of Queens Moat Houses Hotels. He travels extensively at home and overseas on the snooker circuit but always enjoys returning to his seaside home in Sussex.
