In addition, the book was passed to the recipient's son, Moorfield Storey, the first president of the NAACP with his bookplate on the front pastedown. Original publisher's brown cloth binding with gilt lettering on the spine. 4 3/4" x 7 1/4." 324 pages, complete. Bookplate of the Marysville City Library tipped in on front pastedown. Imprint of "University Press: Welch, Bigelow, and Company, Cambridge" on copyright page. Pages and covers are very clean and intact. Pages have slight age toning. Covers are sunned at the edges of the covers and on the spine. Slight chipping on the surface of the front cover and head and tail of spine. Slight corner and edge wear. A Very Good copy. Referenced from the Bibliography of American Literature (BAL), no. 13117: "State 'B'; no priority." James Russell Lowell (1819-1891) was an American author, poet, literary critic, and diplomat. He was part of a group of New England writers named the Fireside Poets who were very popular and also included other prominent poets such as Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, John Greenleaf Whittier, and Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr. This book was based on Lowell's travels to Italy from 1850-1852.
