A speech originally delivered before the United States House of Representatives on January 19, 1848 by Robert Milligan McLane (1815-1898), an American lawyer, politician, diplomat, and military officer. McLane served as a member of the Maryland Senate from 1845-1847, a U.S. Representative from Maryland from 1847-1851 and 1879-1883, the 39th Governor of Maryland from 1884-1885, and Minister to the Qing Empire (1854), Mexico (1859-1860), and France (1885-1889). McLane was a Democrat. He, like most of his fellow party members, were supportive of the Mexican-American War. The Whigs were generally opposed the war. In this speech, McLane clearly yet concisely defends U.S. involvement in the war. Among his arguments is his claim that the annexation of Texas was valid and constitutional. He directly counters the concerns of the Whig Party regarding the war and resulting events such as defining the boundaries of Texas.. Book. Book Condition: Very Good. Binding: Soft cover
