The Battle of the Caribbean took place from 1941-1945 during World War II. During this battle, the Axis powers (in the form of German U-boats and Italian submarines) attempted to disrupt the supply of Allied resources in the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico. The author specifically talks about the islands of Curacao and Aruba, which were (and are) controlled by the Netherlands, and their role in providing oil to Allied forces during the war. Moore says Curacao and Aruba are especially "on guard," considering that Axis submarines were launching attacks near the two islands and the Netherlands had already been captured by Germany. While most of the article is about military operations on the two islands, Moore briefly talks about the geography of Curacao and Aruba and the everyday life of locals, soldiers, and other residents..
