NEILSON, Geo. B : A Collection of 35 Stereoscopic Photographs (Stereocards) of Underground Scenes of Miners at Work, Presumably All East Rand Mines

Geo B Neilson, Boksburg North and Georgetown, No Date (1890's)

35 stereocards, the mounts marked and spotted as usual due to acid nature of the card, the images varying from very strong (18) to somewhat faded, all still discernable. Individual cards are extremely scarce, and large collections even more so. An evocative series of images showing the relatively primitive nature of underground workings during the initial stages of the opening up of the Witwatersrand gold mines.
