NELLIE J. GORDON : 1865 HANDWRITTEN CIVIL WAR ERA MANUSCRIPT DIARY WRITTEN BY A SECRETIVE, MAN CRAZY NEW HAMPSHIRE GIRL

48mo - over 3" - 4" tall. On offer is the original handwritten 1865 Civil War era diary Nellie J. Gordon [sometimes called Ellen]. Research suggests she is from southern New Hampshire. Nellie appears to be a younger woman perhaps late teens or early twenties. The entries are about the weather and daily life but of particular interest were personal life comments that suggest she was a boy crazy gal and that a number of entries were in a code. A small pocket in the back of the diary contained some ephemera: a small picture of a woman; a lock of hair in a folded paper; 2 merit rewards; plus a small folded paper with the key to the code and a note that reads "Do Not Tell Anyone" to a Lewis Roul [?]. More than a casual reading with time spent deciphering the coded notes should reveal further details of this interesting, secretive woman. G.. Manuscript. Book Condition: Good
