Newnes, George (Ed) : The Strand Magazine - An Illustrated Monthly - Vol V January to June 1893

George Newnes Ltd., London, 1893

652 pages (complete). A much owned copy that has not been kindly stored. A most interesting collection of "The Strand" magazine from 1893. Of most particular interest are the FIRST appearances of Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes short-stories: "Case of the Cardboard Box", "Adventure of the Yellow Face", "Adventure of of the Stockbrokers' Clerk", "Adventure of the "Gloria Scott"", "Adventure of the Musgrave Ritual", "Adventure of the Reigate Square". Whilst these are now widely available it is fascinating to see them in their original context and place in the magazine. Other contributors with original stories included: Constance Beerbohm (sister of Herbert Beerbohm Tree and of Max Beerbohm), Walter Besant (the brother-in-law of Annie Besant), Parliamentary sketch writer Henry W Lucy (after whom Shackleton named a mountain in Antarctica), prolific author of detective stories Arthur Morrison (in this case with his wonderful Zig-Zag Zoo stories together with illustrator J A Shepherd), E W Hornung (better known for his "Raffles" stories), Iza Duffus Hardy (who became younger the older she became), Charles Mansford. There are interviews with Dr Barnardo, Sir Robert Rawlinson (to whom the modern world owes an IMMENSE debt for his works on public santitation) and Harry Furniss. An exclusive visit to Sandringham with the Prince of Wales (later Edward VII). This copy quarter bound in leather. There is wear all about. The leathered corners and spine have wear to edges and seam edges. The boards have scuffing and marking and some wear. Nonetheless the spine is characterful and benign. Within, the contents are worn and marked here and there. They are amiable and affable. The pages are sure, clear, benevolent, fascinating, generous and companionable. The binding is a little creaky but secure and assured. A fascinating and engaging collection. fk. Book Condition: Fair. Binding: Hardcover. Jacket: No Jacket
