UK,Demy 8vo wraps,Proof Only copy,1st edn, before publication.[Publisher's Proof before publication.Proof copies denote the first format and its first appearance in print of the book/title.Often of limited availability, the text of a forthcoming book,is printed and bound in softcovers for use by the author, editors, proofreaders and some favoured reviewers. For undecorated printed wraps, with minimal publication data imprinted - the produced/ released number of copies would almost certainly be less than 500,and most probably would tend to be around 200 copies. For glossy pictorial illustrated wrappers, produced numbers are often higher than 200,but either have a scarcity to them.Often errors or earlier versions of text appear in these proofs. Versions where the text has changed considerably are obviously considered more desirable,by their nature.] VG+. Owner's handwritten ink name+date to top corner of sporadically foxed/spotted plain white, front free endpaper, and publisher's synopsis slip stapled to inside of the top corner of the front paper cover and absence of a printed published price.Publisher's original,sharp-cornered,matt,pale blue (but now inevitably aged and slightly darkened) paper covers with black lettering to front, spine/backstrip,rear cover plain without lettering; with negligible shelf-wear, bumping, creasing to edges and corners - no nicks, tears or splits present.Front cover also with (assumed) publisher's faded ink proof stamp.Spine/backstrip with shrinkage wrinkling from production process of 'perfect binding' used in p/back and softbacks,i.e glueing of books's signatures to the covers.Top edges slightly dust-soiled with sporadic foxing/ spotting,fore-edge slightly brighter, cleaner and with less sporadic foxing/ spotting; contents generally bright with the exception of the presence of a later '70's newspaper cutting laid in loose between pp18/9 that has caused off-setting shadows back to the recto of the [unpaginated] contents list/ table page and then forwards to verso of pp22 - remainder of text block unaffected and clean without foxing/spotting and no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corners - appears unread, other than my own collation.UK,Demy 8vo Proof Only copy,1st edn,10-308pp [paginated] includes an introduction,VI (6) sections comprising 17 chapters; plus [unpaginated] blank/front+ rear free endpapers,half-title+title pages, a dedication with blank verso and to the rear,a glossary+note on the rouble, and 8pp blanks. Visually the exterior appearance is acceptable for a book of it's age and nature, i.e. a p/back Proof, and even internally, the book is in an exceptional condition/state of preservation and presentation. It is only the exterior faults/and other minor flaws described, that prevent a better grading. An original but very scarce Proof copy.An opportunity to own the original first appearance of this title as an alternative to the modern, more expensive re-issues. Alec Nove is/was the James Bonar Professor of Economics at the University of Glasgow and author of 'The Soviet Economy'. The author deals with many aspects of Soviet political economy, planning problems, and statistics.Starting with an attempt to evaluate the rationality of Stalinism,he discusses the possible political consequences of the search for greater economic efficiency, and this is followed by a controversial discussion of Kremlinology. The next two groups of chapters are respectively concerned with industrial and agricultural problems, and include an anlysis of the situation of the peasants as this is reflected in literary journals. The essay on social welfare (unlike some of the author's other work) has been used in the Soviet press as evidence against over-enthusiastic cold-warriors,among whom the author is not always popular. There are also elaborate statistical surveys of occupational patterns and the purchasing power of wages, and a chapter which seeks to examine the irrational statistical reflection of irrational economic decisions. The final chapter seeks to generalize about the evolution of world communism. All those interested in Soviet affairs will find a great deal to interest them in this thought provoking volume.
